September Dr. Sketchy's: Villainesses

Friday, August 21, 2009

Dr. Sketchy's presents Villainesses, aka Jessica Nova as Poison Ivy & Emma Frost. (Yes, we know the White Queen is "reformed" now, but she's still a tart and it's only a matter of time before she forms a new Hellfire Club and then attacks Professor X on the Astral Plane and-- er, ahem, let's start this over.)

On Wednesday, September 2nd, Dr. Sketchy returns to the Tatame Lounge for another night of narwhals, drinks and drawing! Jessica Nova (courtesy of CosplayDeviants.com!) is our fabulous model dressed as Poison Ivy and White Queen. It's only $5 (we have to keep our models happy and fed) for you starving artists out there, but you can bring your non-drawing drinking buddies with you for free. The session starts at 8pm, and lasts until 10. We recommend you arrive around 7:45 or earlier so you have plenty of time to grab a seat and start a bar tab.

We'll have door prizes, wacky drawing contests, silly games, and more. Bring your sketchbooks, your friends, and a sense of humor!

PLEASE spread the word! The more the merrier! :D

(I wanted to call this session "A Convenient Truth" because of the costume pairing, but it's only funny if you know about the White Queen's secondary mutation. Global warming isn't really that funny, is it?)

Dr. Sketchy Feedback

Monday, August 10, 2009

Dearest Art Monkeys,

We might have become a victim or our own success-- Thanks to all your support, our monthly sessions are now routinely packed. We've been listening to your feedback, and we just might have outgrown our venue. Our goal is to keep Sketchy's laid-back, intimate, and social... so we're looking into some possible solutions. (Some options include holding additional sessions each month at Tatame, or moving to a larger venue.)

Of course, we need your feedback!

1. How do you feel about our current venue, Tatame Lounge? (Size, capacity, atmosphere, location, drink prices, etc)

2. Would you like to see us in a bigger venue? (If yes, have any suggestions?)

3. How many sessions should we hold a month?

4. What days of the week should we hold sessions?

5. Anything else you'd like to suggest or comment on? We're listening.

Pictures and news!

So, here's the juiciest parts first.

The August Session (featuring the lovely Ms. Mars)

The July Session (featuring the lovely Ana Aesthetic, thanks to Adrienne for the ossum photos)

Now, onto equally juicy things!

We've seen lots of neat new people attending over the past few months, and hope everyone's enjoying our little show. We hope to keep you comin' back thirsty for more sake, arts and good times. We've been talking to some of our regulars and our newcomers, and they're doing some pretty amazing things, and we'd like to give some of them a mention cause they're all sorts of awesome.

The God Machine

Drawn and authored by one of our friendliest (and spookiest) art monkeys, Chandra Free's comic is bustin' out into print like a chestburster in a chihuahua. Her art's slick, sexy and possibly encrusted with the salty tears of a million people who looked at it and cried out, "I AM COMPLETE NOW!" to the heavens before spontaneously combusting on the spot.

You can check out the comic's DeviantArt, her personal DeviantArt, or join the God Machine's Facebook page to get updates.

You can also pre-order the upcoming issue directly by going here.

Big Chris' Gallery

Big Chris does some jaw-droppingly beautiful art. I have snuck up on the guy just to watch him draw stuff at Sketchy's, because it's so exceptionally polished and refined that it just wows me that he can get all that out done in 10-15 minutes. He's also a really helpful dude that snagged us Ms. Mars for August!

Check out Big Chris' gallery here, and you too, can be stunned into silence. You can also see updates on his Facebook Page.

Analog Artist Digital World

This is the blog of Thomas Thorspecken, a really neat fellow who recently started attending Sketchys. I had a chance to talk to him during the August session (wherein he won a sweet rave cup -- don't ask) and he told me about his blog. I spent about an hour going through all the pages when I had the chance to look at it. I was transfixed. The sheer level of detail and care in his work is hypnotic and surreal all at the same time. He makes me <3 watercolors.

His blog is here, and you should totally check it out.

If you've got an interesting project going on, feel free to drop us a line at drsketchyorlando@gmail.com. We are slaves to the strange and unique.
